Building Trust Essay Contest
The Building Trust Essay Contest invites medical students to reflect on trust and its relationship to health care. In response to this topic, students are encouraged to use personal experience to help them write their essays. These experiences may include experiences in leadership, mentorship, and health equity. Essays should be between 750 and 1,000 words. The winning essays will be published in the September/October issue of The New Physician and promoted on the AMSA website and social media.
The term “trust” refers to a sense of faith or confidence in another person or group. It is also a valuing of others’ abilities and integrity. It is essential for a relationship to be successful. However, the concept of trust is complicated. For one, it is important to understand how trust is developed and maintained over time.
Public trust in the federal government has steadily decreased over time. Only once in the last five decades has it ever surpassed fifty percent, and that was in the months following 9/11. Events such as the assassinations in the 1960s, the Vietnam War, Nixon’s resignation, and stagflation in the late 1970s led to a decline in trust. The percentage of Americans who trust the federal government has dropped from eighty-five percent in 1966 to twenty-four percent in 1981. Recent events like the Watergate scandal and hyperpartisanship have further damaged the trust in government.
A lack of trust in others can be harmful to relationships, business partnerships, and family relationships. Mistrust can cause people to isolate themselves and feel isolated and lonely. Lack of trust can be the result of past experiences or family problems. In any case, trust and confidence are essential for establishing a healthy relationship. The ability to trust others is essential for a successful friendship.
