The Practice of Bodhizazen

The practice of bodhizazen is an important component of Zen. The idea is to achieve enlightenment by means of secular means, allowing the mind to be detached from fame, profit, and the ordinary world. The practice of bodhi-mind recognizes the transient nature of all things. This practice is also called non-arising mind or the appearance of a billion worlds. The mind cannot be identified with the self, making it a perfect practice for achieving the Bodhi-mind.

The teachings of zazen originated in India, where the Buddha lived for nine years in a cave. He practiced zazen while facing a wall and did not speak a word. The Shaolin monks, who were influenced by Bodhidharma’s zazen practice, wanted to know how he managed to reach this state of mind, and sought to learn this technique. However, the monks were not strong enough to practice such long periods and often fell asleep. He then taught the Shaolin monks how to perform the wall-facing meditation, and they were able to complete the lengthy meditation sessions.

In the ancient times, the Bodhidharma remained in a cave for nine years, practicing zazen. He never spoke or ate, and did not practice any form of religion. During this time, he became so enlightened that he was unable to see any delusion and entered the realm of the Buddha in one thought. The Bodhidharma also taught the Shaolin monks how to practice zazen, but the monks were too weak to practice it, and they often fell asleep. In addition to zazen, Bodhidharma also learned Indian breathing techniques and martial arts.

Bodhidharma’s zazen practice was so profound that he stayed in a cave for nine years without speaking. This practice prompted the Shaolin monks to imitate him, and he eventually taught it to his monks. He later taught other monks to do the same, but the monks were too weak to endure long meditation sessions. In contrast, the Bodhidharma also taught his disciples to study martial arts and Indian breathing exercises.

Bodhidharma taught zazen for nine years, facing a wall. He didn’t speak during the entire time. The Shaolin monks admired his zazen, and he taught it to them. But the monks were too weak to bear the long meditation sessions and fell asleep. As a result, they were able to learn the martial art and the Indian breathing techniques of Bodhidharma.

The practice of zazen has many benefits. The practice enables you to reach a state of mind where no thought interferes with the practice. It allows you to enter the realm of the Buddha directly. While you are in the zazen state, you will become more conscious and awake. During this period, the Bodhidharma’s teachings will become clearer and you will feel that your mind is more balanced.
